WHAT IS THE SILFRA FISSURE?
The Silfra fissure is a natural crack in the earth’s crust located in Thingvellir National Park, Iceland. It is situated between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are slowly moving apart approximately 2 centimeters per year, causing the crack to widen over time. This movement is caused by the divergence of the plates, which creates tension that is released through volcanic and seismic activity.
HOW COLD IS THE WATER?
The water temperature, is quite chilly, as it remains between 2°C – 4°C throughout the year. In the winters can feel very cold depending on the temperature outside. The fissure is filled with crystal-clear glacial water that has been filtered through porous lava rock for decades, resulting in some of the clearest water in the world. The guides will even advise you to drink it when you’re snorkeling! 🙂 The water is so clear that visibility can exceed 100 meters.
MY EXPERIENCE OF SNORKELING IN SILFRA IN FEBRUARY:
Although Snorkeling in Silfra is an exciting and unique experience, it can also be physically and mentally challenging. I was mentally prepared for the cold water temperature and tight-fitting to cause discomfort for a while. But, before I knew it, I was well adopted with the situation. You need not worry too much as tour companies try their best to make your experience easy, enjoyable and safe.
On reaching the snorkel spot at Thingvellir National Park, the excursion started with a briefing on safety and equipment usage. The gear provided included a drysuit, hood, gloves, and snorkeling equipments. The drysuit provides thermal protection and keeps the you dry throughout the activity(except your face and gloves). The guides also provided snorkeling techniques and safety protocols to ensure an enjoyable and safe experience.
We were a team of 6. Once geared up, the snorkeling excursion began with a short hike to the entry point. The entry point is a platform that extends over the fissure. From here, we entered the water and began our journey through the Silfra fissure. The water was so clear that it creates an illusion of floating in air. The different shades of blue and green of the water were simply stunning, making it a sight to behold.
The journey through Silfra took about 30-45 minutes. The guides lead the way, and the group moved at a leisurely pace, allowing for ample time to take in the sights and sounds of the fissure. The rock formations that line the fissure were breathtaking. There was hardly any marine life in that temperature but the tectonic plates looked incredible.
WHO CAN DO THIS SNORKELING IN SILFRA TOUR AND DO YOU NEED TO KNOW SWIMMING?
Snorkeling in Silfra is an activity that is suitable for all levels of experience, including beginners. Swimming is always a useful skill, but to be honest you don’t need to know how to swim. You will be provided a drysuit that is waterproof and will not only protect you from getting wet, it will also help you float! Some handy instructions below:
WHAT TO BRING?
They actually provide all the equipment needed for the actual underwater experience along with dry bag to store your belongings while you’re in the water, which will stay safely onshore.
Make sure to bring thick socks to keep your feet warm and protected from the elements. Don’t forget a small towel and a change of clothes for after your swim. If you wear glasses, be sure to bring your contact lenses along as well. When you’re snorkeling, it’s important to wear thin, warm clothes underneath the drysuit to stay comfortable.
BEST WAY TO FREEZE THE MEMORIES FROM YOUR SNORKELLING EXPERIENCE:
You’re more than welcome to bring your own GoPro to capture the memorable moments of your snorkeling adventure. However, the tour guide will be taking photos throughout the tour and will send them to you via email. I received the drive link in 2 days and I have even used most of the photos in this blog.
To sum it up, Snorkeling in silfra is an experience that should be on every adventure enthusiast’s bucket list. The crystal-clear water and stunning rock formations create an unforgettable experience that is truly unique. With experienced guides, suitable equipment, and the right thermal clothing, snorkeling in Silfra is an activity that is suitable for everyone. It is an experience that will stay with you long after the excursion is over and one that should not be missed when visiting Iceland.
